Prostate artery embolization (PAE) is an image-guided treatment for urinary symptoms related to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
A specialist guides a thin catheter through an artery in the wrist or groin. Small particles reduce blood flow to the prostate, allowing it to shrink gradually. Your team will discuss whether this approach fits your needs.

Your procedure
An interventional radiologist treats the prostate through a small arterial access site while a urologist is readily available. Local anesthesia is used; your team will explain the sedation plan.
Your recovery
Most people leave the same day. Follow your discharge instructions; symptom improvement develops over the following weeks and months.

Meet Dr. Joel Wolf
Interventional Radiologist
Dr. Joel Wolf is a board-certified interventional radiologist with specialized training in minimally invasive, image-guided procedures throughout the body, including prostate artery embolization (PAE).
He completed medical school at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 2015, followed by a diagnostic radiology residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s Jacobi Medical Center and a fellowship in interventional radiology at Montefiore Medical Center.
Dr. Wolf performs a variety of advanced procedures, including:
- Prostate artery embolization (PAE)
- Uterine fibroid embolization
- Hemorrhoid artery embolization
- Limb-salvage procedures for peripheral arterial disease
He has trained with national leaders in PAE and is committed to providing patients with safe, effective, and minimally invasive options for treating enlarged prostate.

Talk to our teamWhat is BPH?
Benign prostatic hyperplasia is noncancerous prostate enlargement. It can contribute to urinary difficulties. Similar symptoms can have other causes, so a clinician should evaluate them.
Who may be a candidate for PAE?
PAE may be considered when urinary symptoms from BPH are troublesome. Your urologist and interventional radiologist review your history, prostate anatomy and treatment goals before recommending an option. A quiz result cannot establish candidacy.
How does PAE compare with other treatments?
Options may include monitoring, medicines, minimally invasive procedures and surgery. PAE reduces blood supply rather than removing prostate tissue. Each approach has different benefits, risks and durability; your team can compare them for your situation.
What symptoms might improve?
PAE may help symptoms associated with BPH, including frequent urination, nighttime waking and a weak stream. Improvement varies, and symptoms caused by another condition may need different treatment.
How long does the procedure take?
Your appointment includes preparation and monitoring as well as treatment. The treatment time depends on your anatomy and care plan; ask the team what to expect for your visit.
What is recovery like?
Most patients return home on the day of treatment. Temporary urinary or pelvic discomfort can occur. Follow your clinician’s instructions about activity, medications and follow-up.
When will I notice a difference?
Relief typically develops gradually over weeks to months as the prostate shrinks. Some people need further treatment. Your follow-up appointments help assess progress.
What are the risks?
Potential problems include discomfort, bleeding or bruising at the access site, infection, temporary difficulty urinating, and contrast-related reactions. Unintended blockage of blood supply to nearby tissue can also occur. Your specialist will explain individual risks and alternatives.
Will insurance cover PAE?
Coverage and referral rules depend on your plan and clinical situation. Ask the scheduling team about benefit verification and any authorization requirements before treatment.
